Northern Ireland: Traditional August fires were lit in areas across Derry over the weekend. On that occasion, riots broke out and the Israeli, American and Northern Irish flags were set on fire, as well as a picture of Queen Elizabeth II.
Several fires continue to cause controversy in the city, young people who participated in the arson have been criticized for antisocial behavior and the burning of objects and symbols associated with the union tradition.
A picture of Queen Elizabeth II was attached to one of the biggest fires, in Bogside, before it was set on fire last night. Allied flags, the flags of Northern Ireland and the American and Israeli flags, as well as the flags of the parachute regiment – a regiment whose soldiers were responsible for the bloody Sunday shootings in the city in 1972 – were also placed on piles of wooden pallets.

Northern Ireland Deputy Prime Minister Michelle O’Neill said on Twitter that there could be no place in society for burning flags and emblems.
Society cannot be a place of burning flags and emblems. Those involved in the Derry arson do not represent Republicanism. They also act against the wishes of the local community. We must all continue to work to end the outburst of hatred.
