Montenegro will responsibly approach the fulfillment of all tasks on the plan of further improvement of the Alliance’s activities.
Defense Minister Dragan Krapović said this during an official visit to the headquarters of the North Atlantic Treaty Organization in Brussels. He met with NATO Deputy Secretary General Mircea Joan in Brussels.
Krapović, the Ministry of Defense announced, expressed Montenegro’s strong commitment to the values inherited by the Euro-Atlantic community.
“And expressed the determination of our country to responsibly approach the fulfillment of all tasks in the plan for further improvement of the Alliance’s activities. The minister stated that the modern security context indicates the justification of all decisions that were made in the past period to strengthen the position of NATO through the strengthening of collective defense, which ultimately aims to preserve long-term stability. He said that the security developments in Eastern Europe are a clear indication that all allies must continue to make continuous efforts aimed at improving deterrence and defense, reminding that our country also makes an active contribution in this area, which is reflected in the engagement of members of the Army of Montenegro within combat groups in Latvia and Bulgaria”, the announcement reads.
Speaking about the decisions made at this year’s Summit in Viljnus, Krapović, it is added, stated that an important prerequisite for their successful implementation is the commitment of all allies to stable investment for defense needs.
He pointed out that Montenegro, as a credible ally, will strive to exceed the level of two percent of GDP for the defense budget in 2024, of which more than a quarter will be allocated for the modernization and equipping of the Army of Montenegro.
It was announced that Joana was praised for Montenegro’s contribution to the timely implementation of tasks from the NATO agenda, especially considering the current events on the global level that require a strong and decisive response from the entire international community.
“Also, he praised our determination to increase allocations for defense needs during the next year and emphasized that reaching at least 2% of GDP for defense is the most important prerequisite for successfully fulfilling obligations and a clear confirmation of unity within the Alliance. Džoana said that an intensive process of implementation of the decisions made at this year’s Summit is underway to improve the capacity and capabilities of the Alliance. In this context, he emphasized that this requires additional engagement of all allies, and the results of joint work will be reviewed at the meeting of NATO leaders that will be held in Washington next year. The Deputy Secretary General of NATO encouraged Montenegro to continue contributing to the system of collective defense and other NATO tasks, since only with a united effort can we successfully transform the Alliance so that it can respond as effectively as possible to all current and future security challenges”, the statement concludes.
