In the area of Krajina, in the town of Donja Lučka, along the road that leads from Cazin to Velika Kladuša, there are dozens of niches…
…which in this region are called “sidewalk sights”.
The Kajtezović National Monument aims at the valuable treasure of the Krajina region
The rising of tombstones by the side of the road is not a rare phenomenon in this part of the country, and in Krajina, it is also customary to bury the deceased in a different place compared to the place of the memorial.
The director of the JU “Centre for Culture and Tourism” Cazin Ermin Beganović states for Fena that Kajtezović’s sights were declared a national monument in 2006 by the Decision of the Commission for the Preservation of National Monuments of Bosnia and Herzegovina. These sights are characterized by their ornamentation and the construction system itself.
Nišans are quite large, while the male ones exceed three meters in height.
– It is important to point out that most of the niches located at this location were built from indigenous stone from our area – biocide, and the first niches that were placed on the cemetery itself – the original 16 niches were placed in the period from 1913 to 1964 – he stated is he.
He underlines that the plot on which this monument is located is private property, which makes it difficult for the Center for Culture and Tourism, which manages national monuments in the area of the City of Cazin, but also because the family that owns the plot is not in Bosnia and Herzegovina. , and therefore it is more difficult to communicate with them to improve the visibility of that national monument.
Researchers initially identified 16 niches in Donja Lučka, but over the years that number has multiplied.
This location is also the cemetery of the Kajtezović family, which has been burying its members there for more than a century. Among the aforementioned original 16 niches, eight are men’s and eight are women’s, which are visibly different in style of construction.
The base of the scope has dimensions of about 40×40 cm. In the lower zone, they are decorated with decorations with many plant motifs. In the middle of the composition, there is usually an ibrik in the center which is a smaller, usually octagonal rosette. There is an inscription in the Turkish language on the middle part of the sight.
The zone above the inscription is decorated with crescents with one or more stars. All nišans have approximately the same richly decorated turbans, characteristic of this part of Bosnia and Herzegovina. On the edges of the sight, as well as under the turban, there is a decoration in the form of a twisted ribbon.
Women’s sights are smaller and are located behind the men’s. They are also richly decorated with the fact that instead of a turban, a woman’s braid appears. In the lower part, there are also decorations with plant motifs and crucibles with a rosette in the middle, with the fact that the rosette in this case is more richly decorated. The middle part of the site is intended for an inscription.
The influence of local masters who developed a characteristic type of sight over the centuries is also visible in the territories that stretch east of the Bosnian border. The outer surfaces of the stone are polished and processed with a tool that is still used today when processing stone in these regions – a saw and a grinder.
