Saudi Arabia’s WTO Candidate Says Reform Necessary for Organization

Riyadh, July 19, 2020: Saudi newspapers highlighted in their editorials today a number of issues, at local, regional, and international arenas.

Al-Riyadh, Al-Yaum, and Al-Bilad newspapers said in their editorials that Saudi Arabia’s candidate for the position of Director General of the World Trade Organization (WTO), Mohammad Al-Tuwaijri, succeeded on last Friday in diagnosing the current situation of WTO and its problems that affected its general performance.

The papers pointed out to the statement of Al-Tuwaijri who said that the organization was in a state of stagnation and that reform was necessary, confirming that he has appropriate programs, plans and vision that would creating a consensus among all member states.

The papers said that Saudi Arabia nomination of its candidate to assume the position of Director General of WTO is an extension of its role in activating international cooperation in light of its current presidency of the G20 summit.

Kingdom of Saudi Arabia supports international efforts to advance the organization and formulate a strategic vision for the G20 member states to enhance the role of trade in driving economic growth and achieving sustainable development, the papers concluded.
