Orthodox priest arrested in Montenegro on suspicion of committing criminal offense of failure to comply with health regulations to control infectious disease

Podgorica, (MINA) – Worship in Budva is contrary to health regulations for combating a dangerous infectious disease, the Council for Civilian Control of Police Work said.

The Council said that Budva police officers acted professionally and conscientiously towards priest Goran Bacan in all actions taken.

“Priest Bacan is in the detention facilities of the Security Center in Budva and has refused the offered medical examination. Access to food and water was provided and church religious literature was brought to him, ”the council said.

As they stated, Budva police officers carried out a planned check on compliance with interim measures to prevent the spread of infectious disease.

“At about 11 o’clock, they also carried out a check at the Reževići monastery, where a total of 11 citizens were detained during the church rite,” the Council recalled.

The service was performed by the priest Baćan who, following the information received, in consultation with the Basic State Prosecutor’s Office (ODT) in Kotor, was arrested on suspicion of committing the criminal offense of Failure to Comply with Health Regulations for the Suppression of Infectious Disease

“The ODT ordered him to stay for up to 72 hours,” the council said.

The Council said that they had, on their own initiative, checked the behavior of Budva police officers.

They urged coordination within church and religious structures to be faster and of better quality.

“While on the one hand, the Montenegrin-Littoral Metropolitan Government officially supports the Government’s efforts, on the other hand, at the local level, there are individual obstructions that endanger the health of the population, which necessitates lawful police action,” the Council said.

They warned that lawful and professional conduct by police was not used to spread hate speech and incite negative sentiment and comment on police officers.
