NEW YORK, May 13 (FENA) – New York Governor Andrew Cuomo said about 100 children in New York have contracted a “rare” disease believed to be linked to a new type of coronavirus (COVID-19).
Cuomo told a news conference that he was investigating an “inflammatory syndrome” that affects children and is thought to be linked to COVID-19, which attacks blood vessels and organs and has symptoms similar to Kawasaki’s disease and toxic shock.
He said that three children have died in the New York so far due to the mentioned disease, and about 100 children have shown symptoms.
New York Mayor Bill de Blasio announced on Tuesday that at least 52 children had the syndrome and urged parents to contact pediatricians immediately if their children show the above symptoms, including fever, rash, abdominal pain and vomiting, Reuters reports.
In New York, the syndrome has been found in a wide range of young people. A 5-year-old boy, a 7-year-old boy and an 18-year-old girl died.
About 23 percent of cases are registered in children under the age of 5, about 29 percent between the ages of 5 and 9, about 28 percent between the ages of 10 and 14, and 16 percent between the ages of 15 and 19.
