Hydration

Most of us know that is important to staying hydrated – especially during the summer! Water does so much to keep our body healthy and it keeps every system in the body functioning properly.

Some of the benefits of drinking more water are:

* flushing bacteria from your bladder
* carrying nutrients and oxygen to your cells
* helps with digestion
* prevents constipation
* normalizing blood pressure
* stabilizing the heartbeat
* cushioning joints
* protecting organs and tissues
* regulating body temperature
* maintaining electrolyte (sodium) balance.

So how much water should you drink? The National Academy of Medicine suggests an adequate intake of daily fluids of about 13 cups and 9 cups for healthy men and women, respectively, with 1 cup equaling 8 ounces.
However that may vary depending whether you’re sweating and exercising, or if you are outside on a hot day. It is always best to consult with your healthcare professional. Especially if you have certain health conditions, like thyroid or a kidney disease, liver, or heart problems; or if you are taking medications that make you retain water, opiate pain medications, and some antidepressants.
